Arbitecture

Context

Next to the main Expo 98 area in Lisboa, an arboretum has been established which will be open to visitors to the Expo. It has a small visitor centre. The Arbitecture software will be running on a standalone personal computer which will be available to the visitors. These pages show something about how the software looks. If you want to see the whole thing, then you should visit Expo!

The Software

The software illustrates the principles underlying the layout of trees in the arboretum: namely the idea of tree species belonging to one of 22 different architectural types or ‘models’. The user can see a map of the arboretum, see how tree species are classified into models, and get more information about each of the models. If you want more detail, then you can read the specification document for the software.

Credits

World in a Box Limited designed and developed the software. The software was commissioned by Francisco Rego, of the Instituto Superior de Agronomia, Lisboa. The arboretum project and the software development received financial support from EXPO '98. The software uses illustrations from a book called Tropical Trees and Forests, which was originally published by Springer Verlag.
